Happy Thanksgiving!

November 27th, 2007 · No Comments

I had an extremely relaxing Thanksgiving this year. We didn’t go anywhere or have anyone over. It was just the five of us and it was great.

I spent Wednesday working from home or at least trying to work from home. I didn’t know it until that morning, but the kids didn’t have school that day. Not having them at school always makes working from home an interesting experience. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times I tell everyone that I’m working, they never seem to believe me. Thankfully I only had to dial into one meeting that day, so the general chaos of home didn’t affect anyone else.

We ended up going bowling that night, which was a fun way to start the four-day weekend. There happened to be an air hockey table at the bowling alley and Keegan became obsessed with air hockey. The next day he created his own air hockey game with an old Rubbermaid container and some legos.

He tried his best explain to Nolan how to play, but never did have much luck getting Nolan to cooperate. They even incorporated swim goggles into the game to make sure they didn’t get hit in eye while they played. That of course had me in stitches when I came in and found them looking so ridiculous, but taking the game of home-made air hockey so seriously.

Thanksgiving Day it self was pretty low-key. Toni had to work in the afternoon, so I was able to watch some football in the morning and then had to do the cooking. It was fairly easy duty since we cooked a chicken instead of a turkey.

As silly as it sounds, when it came time to buy the turkey we realized we didn’t have room in our fridge for a turkey. One of the items taking up space happened to be a chicken, so I barbequed up a beer-can chicken to go along with all of the traditional side dishes (click here for the beer can chicken recipe).

I was a little bummed I wouldn’t be able to barbeque a turkey this year (click here for the turkey with white wine recipe). We did it last year for Thanksgiving and Christmas and it turned out really good. We had everything else though, so it was still a pretty good meal. Plus Christmas is only a month away, so I can hold out.

Side note: Apples to Apples is a really fun game to play with kids. It doesn’t last forever and the kids really enjoy it. We have the junior edition, but there are a couple to choose from. It’s a great idea for anyone looking to buy a fun Christmas gift for the entire family.

We ended up playing Apples-to-Apples while we ate our pumpkin pie. After the game we did up the dishes and finished the night watching home movies of the kids just after Nolan was born. I can’t believe how fast they grow up…

Friday was an interesting day in that I had originally planned to do absolutely nothing for a change. Nolan on the other hand had other ideas. I sneaked upstairs after lunch and was catching up on some reading when he came in and announced that it was time to get the Christmas tree. I have no idea how or why he decided that we needed to get a Christmas tree at that particular moment, but his mind was made up.

He was cute as hell and I laughed it off. I tried to get back into my book, but he wasn’t taking no for an answer. I then tried to explain to him that we needed to get the living room ready and get out the ornaments and decorations before we could get a tree. I thought after my thorough explanation he’d understand that we weren’t ready to get a tree just yet. Well I was wrong because the next thing I knew Nolan, Keegan, and I were heading off to Lowe’s to get a Christmas tree while Jayden and Toni stayed home and dug out the Christmas decorations.

After finding a tree that would work and getting it home we managed to get the living room rearranged, the tree in the stand, and the lights on the tree before bed time. The next morning I received a 7:00am wakeup call to help finish getting the ornaments on the tree. It actually is a pretty nice tree and, now that it’s done, I’m glad Nolan was so insistent.

Saturday was a terrible day….The Griz were upset in the first-round of the I-AA playoffs, so that kind of put a damper on things for the rest of the weekend for me. Sunday wasn’t much better as the Giants lost to Vikings thanks to Eli Manning’s four interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns. Like I said, it was a bad weekend for my teams.

I know. I know. I need to put things in perspective. I have a lot to be thankful for. Plus I was able to forget about work for a few days and just hang out with my kids. That was really nice and I’m really thankful. Though I still really wish the Griz would have won.
